How Can I Recover My Deleted Files From My Server?


Servers are a great way of sharing and protecting important documents, spread sheets, photos, videos and other files, but sometimes mistakes can happen and files can be deleted in error and this is normally a file that has no back-up copy. The first thing you need to do is stay calm, then check the recycle bin on your computer. If it’s not there you now have two options.

Firstly – you can step away from the computer; call in the server recovery experts and let them do what they are good at. Alternatively, you can try and save the missing files yourself and this is how you can do it.

You need to go to the place that the file was originally saved on your computer and then right click on that folder then select ‘Properties’, the properties dialog box will then open.

At this point you need to click on the tab called ‘previous versions’ and then click twice (double click) on the most recent version of the folder that held your missing file. A list of files will then come up and you can right click on it and then select ‘copy’.

Now open the current version of the folder and ‘paste’ the (now found) file into the folder. Double check it can be opened before closing down the ‘properties’ dialogue box.

You may not have a tab that states ‘previous versions’ if this is the case it may mean your ‘shadow copies’ is not enabled so it is recommended that you contact your IT Administrator for more details.

If you are unable to recover your server in this manner it may be wise to call in the server recovery experts and they will be able to use their training and experience to get your missing files back.
